€6,000 MacBook Pro: Should I Throw It Away After 6 Years?

MacBook Pro 16-inch Intel: Six Years Later
The 16-inch MacBook Pro introduced in late 2019 was Apple's last generation of large Intel-based MacBook Pro machines, and for many configurations it represented the peak of Apple's Intel Mac hardware.
My particular machine was purchased in 2020 and configured with an Intel Core i9 processor, 64 GB of RAM, 2 TB of internal SSD storage and AMD's Radeon Pro 5600M with 8 GB of HBM2 memory.
It was not a cheap computer.

Check out my channel for other interesting videos.

The machine cost me about €6,000, with approximately €800 of that price going toward the upgrade from the Radeon Pro 5500M to the Radeon Pro 5600M.
At the time, this was a high-end professional laptop intended to handle demanding workloads such as video editing, rendering, software development, virtualization and other CPU- and GPU-intensive tasks.
More than five years later, the same computer is still being used for all of those things.

It is used for everyday work, video editing and rendering, music production, gaming and virtualization. It also runs Windows 11 and Linux from external drives, making it possible to use operating systems and software outside the macOS ecosystem.

One of the most interesting aspects of this generation is its hardware flexibility.

The machine has four Thunderbolt ports, allowing fast external storage, displays and other peripherals to be connected. With sufficiently fast NVMe storage and a good Thunderbolt enclosure, external drives can also provide performance that is surprisingly close to internal storage for many practical workloads.
The cooling system is another important part of the design. The 16-inch chassis provides considerably more room for cooling than smaller MacBook Pro models, allowing the Intel processor and discrete Radeon GPU to operate under sustained workloads.

The keyboard is also significant historically.
Earlier MacBook Pro models used Apple's butterfly keyboard mechanism, which was designed around very shallow key travel and a thinner overall design. The mechanism became associated with reliability problems, including keys that could stick or stop registering when dust or debris entered the mechanism.

The 16-inch MacBook Pro introduced in November 2019 returned to a redesigned scissor mechanism, with approximately 1 mm of key travel and a more traditional typing feel.
The result was a machine that combined many of Apple's traditional laptop characteristics with unusually powerful hardware for its time.

However, its biggest limitation today is no longer necessarily the hardware.

It is software support.
Apple's transition from Intel processors to Apple Silicon eventually made the 16-inch Intel MacBook Pro part of a discontinued architecture. macOS Tahoe 26 is the final major macOS release supporting Intel Macs, while subsequent major macOS releases no longer support Intel hardware.
This creates an important distinction between being unsupported and being unusable.
A computer does not suddenly become slow because its manufacturer stops releasing major operating-system updates.
Applications that already support the hardware can continue to run. Existing projects can continue to be edited. Files can still be accessed. Windows and Linux can continue to run independently of Apple's macOS support decisions.
The practical problem develops gradually.

Applications eventually stop supporting older operating systems or processors. Websites may require newer browsers. Plugins may require newer host applications. New file formats may not be supported by older software. Activation servers and online services can eventually disappear or change their requirements.
Security updates are another factor, although they follow a different schedule from major operating-system releases.
This means there are effectively several different dates involved in the useful life of an older computer.

  • The end of major operating-system updates.
  • The end of security updates.
  • The point at which the software ecosystem around the computer has moved far enough ahead that using the machine becomes inconvenient or unsafe.

Those dates do not necessarily occur at the same time.
For someone who normally stays one major macOS release behind for stability, the end of major releases can also have less immediate practical impact than it might initially appear.
The useful life of the hardware therefore depends on more than Apple's official support list.
It depends on what the owner actually does with the machine, what software they need, whether those applications continue to support the platform, and whether the machine remains compatible with the services and file formats they use.

The 16-inch Intel MacBook Pro is therefore an interesting example of the difference between technological obsolescence and practical obsolescence.

Apple has moved on from Intel.
That does not mean the hardware stopped being capable.
The machine remains a powerful laptop with a high-end CPU, discrete GPU, large memory capacity, fast storage, Thunderbolt connectivity and a cooling system designed for sustained workloads.
Its eventual limitation is likely to be the software ecosystem rather than the physical hardware itself.

And that raises the obvious question.

If a computer that cost more than €6,000 is still capable of handling demanding work six years later, is it really time to throw it away simply because its processor architecture is no longer part of Apple's future?

The answer depends less on its age and more on what you still need it to do.
For some users, the transition to Apple Silicon makes an upgrade worthwhile.
For others, an Intel Mac that continues to run the required software may still have years of practical life left.

In the end, "obsolete" is not necessarily the same thing as "useless."

And after more than five years of daily use, this particular MacBook Pro still has plenty of work left to do.
